What pine needles do in a valley
A roof valley is where two slopes meet, and it carries all the water from both. It is the busiest part of the roof and the least forgiving.
Pine needles do not wash out of a valley. They mat together into a felt that water cannot pass through, and that dam forces water sideways — under the shingles, where the roof was never designed to hold it.
This is why Spring roofs leak in valleys far more than roofs a few miles west. It is not a defect in the roof. It is debris doing something a valley cannot cope with, and it is entirely preventable by clearing them twice a year.
The same felt holds moisture permanently against the roof surface, which rots decking from above and grows the algae that streaks a north slope.
Limb strikes look like nothing and are not
A branch comes down in a storm, you clear it off, the roof looks fine. That is the dangerous case.
A limb strike can fracture the shingle mat and crack the decking beneath while leaving the surface almost unmarked. The shingle still lies flat. The seal is broken and the substrate is damaged, and neither is visible from the ground.
It shows up as a leak six or twelve months later — by which time connecting it to the storm for an insurance claim is difficult and the claim window may have closed.
If a limb of any size has hit your roof, have it looked at within a week, photograph the limb before you remove it, and note the date.
Clearance, and what it buys
- Abrasion. A limb touching the roof does not need a storm to do damage. Ordinary wind rubs it against the shingles day after day, wearing through the granules in a line you can see.
- Continuous debris. Overhanging limbs drop needles directly into valleys and gutters rather than letting most of it blow clear.
- Animal access. Squirrels and raccoons use branches as a bridge, and they get into attics through roof edges and vents.
- Shade, which cuts both ways. Shade slows ultraviolet ageing, but it also keeps the roof damp longer, which suits algae. On balance in this climate the shade is worth having — with the debris managed.
Six to ten feet of clearance from the roofline is a sensible target.

Gutter guards help with gutters and do nothing for valleys, which is where the expensive damage happens.
